Roofing refers to a roof over a structure, usually a building but including all structures and materials needed to support it on either the upper walls of the structure or on uprights, giving protection from rain, wind, sunlight, and extreme temperatures. A roof is often part of the structural envelope of a building. It protects the inside of the building from weather, especially the cold during winter. A strong roof also aids in the energy efficiency of a structure. The roof also can protect a structure from theft and vandalism, as well as improve its appearance. Roofing requires special kinds of materials, such as shingles, tiles, glass, and various types of roofing cement. Roofing repair often involves replacing damaged or old materials with newer ones, in order to provide better protection and function. In some cases, repairs may just need patching, replacement, or degreasing.
The two main types of roofing are single-ply and multi-ply. Single-ply is made up of one sheet of material, usually polyester fiberglass or felt, that is attached to asphalt shingles via felt paper or tar paper. Multi-ply is made up of multiple sheets of different materials, usually asphalt shingles, felt, or tiles, that are attached to each other using felt paper tape or tar paper. The thickness of these layers can determine both the durability of the roof and the maintenance required. A thicker layer of material means that the roof will last longer and require less maintenance; however, a thinner layer means that the roof will be more prone to falling apart due to its thickness.
